Universitatea Craiova president Mihai Rotaru confirmed in a phone interview on Digi Sport Special that the club will activate the buyout clause to make Alexandru Cicâldău’s transfer permanent. The midfielder, currently on loan from Galatasaray, has faced significant injury challenges that halted his season early, with his last appearance dating back to February. Despite these setbacks, Rotaru expressed confidence that Cicâldău will be fully fit and ready to contribute by September.

Rotaru highlighted that Cicâldău had a promising start at Galatasaray, even scoring and being among their top performers, but changes in coaching staff and two injuries—one after a match against UTA and a more serious one later—affected his continuity and form. The club is in the process of renegotiating the financial details of the buyout clause but is committed to securing the player’s return.

Last season, Cicâldău featured in 15 matches for Universitatea Craiova, scoring three goals. His market value stands at around €2 million according to Transfermarkt, underscoring his importance to the team’s midfield structure as they aim to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Cicâldău, 27, is known as a versatile box-to-box midfielder with a strong work ethic and technical ability, qualities that Universitatea Craiova will rely on to boost their domestic league ambitions. His permanent return signals Craiova’s intent to build a competitive side capable of challenging for top honors in Romanian football.

This move also marks a strategic step following Cicâldău’s less impactful spell abroad, aiming to restore his form and confidence at a club where he previously thrived. Universitatea Craiova’s decision to invest in him permanently could prove pivotal for their 2025 season prospects.
