Romania’s U21 team, nicknamed the “Little Tricolors,” has secured a place at the upcoming 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia. This tournament, set to take place from June 11 to June 28, will feature 16 top European teams, split into four groups. Romania’s young talents are expected to face fierce competition as they pursue glory on the continental stage. The draw for the group stage will occur on December 3 in Bratislava.

A Triumph in the Qualifiers
Romania achieved this qualification through a remarkable 3-1 victory over Switzerland in the final group stage match. This win solidified their place among Europe’s elite at the U21 level, marking Romania’s fourth consecutive appearance at the Euros. In past tournaments, Romania achieved notable success, reaching the semifinals in 2019 in Italy but facing more challenging group-stage exits in 2021 (Hungary) and 2023 (Romania), where they participated as hosts.
Under head coach Daniel Pancu, Romania continues a legacy established by previous U21 coaches like Mirel Rădoi, Adrian Mutu, and Emil Săndoi. The team’s qualification demonstrates continuity and growth in Romanian youth football, aiming to compete successfully against Europe’s best.
Tournament Details: Teams and Venues
This year’s tournament will be hosted across eight stadiums in Slovakia, featuring venues in cities like Bratislava (22,500 seats), Trnava (18,200), Dunajska Streda (12,700), Kosice (12,555), and Zilina (10,897), among others. The competition will follow a familiar format: 16 teams divided into four groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. The tournament will then proceed in a knockout format until the champions are crowned.
Romania joins 12 other qualified teams, including host nation Slovakia, and other powerhouses such as Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia, England, Ukraine, France, and Poland. Three additional teams will secure spots through the playoff stage, featuring matchups between Croatia, Finland, Czech Republic, Norway, Belgium, and Georgia, scheduled for November 11 and 19.
Emerging Talents and Potential Stars
The tournament promises to showcase some of Europe’s most promising young players. Expected to feature are stars like Italy’s Cesare Casadei (Chelsea) and Wilfried Gnonto (Leeds), Spain’s Fermin Lopez (Barcelona), Germany’s Kenan Yildiz (Juventus), and England’s Jarell Quansah (Liverpool). Romania’s own standout players, such as Octavian Popescu, Louis Munteanu, and Ianis Stoica, will aim to advance past the group stage, a feat not achieved in the last two editions.
There is also speculation that high-profile players who are eligible for U21 but have already established themselves at the senior level, such as Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid) and Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), may not participate due to their commitments with their respective national teams. Nonetheless, fans can expect a display of top-tier talent from across the continent.
A Tactical Battle of Coaches
Romania’s journey will likely see them face tactically adept teams managed by experienced coaches, including Michael Reiziger, the former Ajax and Barcelona star now leading the Netherlands U21 team, which boasted a perfect record in the qualifiers. Other notable coaches include France’s Gerard Baticle, England’s Lee Carsley, Portugal’s Rui Jorge, and Slovenia’s Milenko Acimovic, all former internationals with impressive resumes. Additionally, should Croatia and the Czech Republic advance from the playoffs, they will be managed by renowned figures Ivica Olic and Jan Suchoparek, respectively.
As Romania prepares for the U21 Euros in Slovakia, expectations are high for Pancu and his team to make a deep run. With a roster of young talent and experienced coaching, Romania hopes to capture the attention of fans and achieve success in a challenging and prestigious tournament.
