Angelescu revealed on July 2 during the Fotbal Club show that talks about Săpunaru’s involvement were held but implied the player was no longer interested in the position. Săpunaru quickly refuted these claims, accusing Angelescu of lying and questioning the sincerity of their friendship.
At Rapid’s new kit presentation on July 7, Angelescu reiterated his stance, expressing regret over the fallout from a past locker-room alcohol scandal that negatively impacted both Săpunaru’s image and the club’s reputation. He maintained that he still considers Săpunaru a friend and is open to his return in the future. Angelescu also highlighted the club’s recent decision to appoint Mauro Pederzoli, a director with significant experience abroad, as a strategic move beneficial to Rapid’s sporting ambitions.
In response, Săpunaru posted on Instagram challenging Angelescu’s narrative and criticizing the club’s shareholders for not addressing the individual responsible for the scandal. He questioned the authenticity of their friendship and the selective nature of truth and justice as presented by Angelescu.
