In a tense exchange that has unfolded in early July 2025, Rapid București’s minority shareholder Victor Angelescu and former player Cristi Săpunaru have publicly disputed the circumstances surrounding Săpunaru’s departure from the club and his possible future role.

Victor Angelescu explained during Rapid’s 2025/2026 kit launch event on July 7 that discussions about Săpunaru’s future centered on a sporting director position. Angelescu indicated that Săpunaru seemed unwilling to accept even an honorary role after the conclusion of his playing contract on June 30, 2025. He expressed regret over a prior locker room alcohol scandal, which had negatively impacted the club’s image and was a key factor in decisions made regarding Săpunaru’s involvement going forward. Angelescu emphasized that he still considers Săpunaru a friend and hopes for his return in some capacity, noting the club’s recent appointment of Mauro Pederzoli as sporting director, whose international experience was deemed an asset for Rapid.

In response, Săpunaru publicly accused Angelescu of dishonesty and questioned the sincerity of their friendship. Posting on Instagram, Săpunaru challenged Angelescu’s narrative, pointing out that the club’s shareholders had not addressed the individual responsible for the scandal that damaged both Săpunaru’s and the club’s reputation. He implied that truth and justice only seemed to matter when convenient for Angelescu and called for clarity on the matter.

This public disagreement comes shortly after Săpunaru’s contract as a player officially ended, and he also stepped down from any executive role within Rapid. Săpunaru, at 41, had been a significant figure for Rapid, both on and off the pitch, known as a club legend. Angelescu acknowledged this and expressed hope that the past issues would not prevent future collaboration.

The dispute highlights ongoing challenges within Rapid’s management structure and the delicate balance between maintaining club integrity and managing high-profile personalities. As Rapid prepares for the new season under coach Costel Gâlcă, with fresh kits unveiled in maroon, white, and gray, the club must also navigate internal relations to stay focused on sporting success.
