Craiova is constructing a state-of-the-art multifunctional sports arena on the site of the historic “Tineretului” stadium, set to be the city’s fourth major sports facility after the 2012 Sala Polivalentă, 2017 Ion Oblemenco Stadium, and the 2020 athletics stadium[1][3]. This €75 million venue, scheduled for completion in August 2027, will feature Romania’s first indoor velodrome, designed to host national and international cycling competitions under UCI standards, plus an indoor athletics arena meeting IAAF regulations for Category I homologation[1].
The complex spans about 35,000 square meters over four levels and will include a 200-meter oval running track, a 60-meter sprint track, jump and throwing event areas, locker rooms, conference spaces, a restaurant, gym, 8,000-seat stands, a playground, and a sports museum[1]. Construction progress has surpassed 70%, with the foundation and basement pillars completed, reflecting efficient advancement despite recent extreme heat warnings[1][2].
This project represents the largest sports investment by the Dolj County Council and promises to elevate Craiova’s profile as a hub for elite indoor athletics and cycling training, reducing reliance on foreign facilities and broadening the city’s appeal for various indoor sports and cultural events[1][2].
