Ghanaian central defender Mohammed Umar, who joined Poli Iași in October 2024 as a free agent, will remain with the Moldovan club despite interest from several prominent Romanian teams including Dinamo, Petrolul, and Rapid.
Umar, who was part of the team that unfortunately suffered relegation, has nonetheless impressed enough to attract suitors within the Superliga. However, Poli Iași’s management has decided not to entertain offers this summer, preferring to keep the 22-year-old defender on their roster. Club president Cornel Șfaițer confirmed, “Umar will continue with us, that is not in question. We have discussed this with the staff and agree on it. There have been no concrete proposals that satisfy us so far. We might revisit this in the winter transfer window. For now, we hope he stays healthy and continues to play”.
Mohammed Umar has a market value of approximately €250,000 according to Transfermarkt, reflecting his rising stock in Romanian football. His contract with Poli Iași runs until the summer of 2026.
Earlier in 2024, Feyenoord, the 2022 UEFA Conference League finalists, reportedly sent scouts to watch Umar in a Superliga match against Botoșani, highlighting his growing profile beyond Romania. Over the last season, Umar featured in 15 league games for Poli Iași and scored once, earning him a place in the extended squad of the Ghanaian national team.
Umar’s continued presence at Poli Iași underlines the club’s determination to build stability and strengthen their squad despite recent setbacks. His development at the club will be closely watched by both domestic and international scouts as the Superliga season progresses.
