CFR Cluj’s recent 3-0 victory over Unirea Slobozia marked a significant moment for the club’s new signing, Louis Munteanu. The 22-year-old forward made an immediate impact by scoring twice in the match, underscoring his value to the team and offering a glimpse of his potential. After the game, Munteanu spoke candidly about his reasons for joining CFR Cluj and his future ambitions.

Why CFR Cluj Over FCSB? Munteanu’s Clear Choice

During a flash interview, Munteanu was asked why he chose CFR Cluj over FCSB, a club that had also shown interest in signing him this summer. The young striker made it clear that he had no intention of joining FCSB, the reigning champions of Romania, although he did not elaborate on the reasons behind this decision. His choice to join CFR Cluj instead was made with confidence, signaling his belief in the club’s project and his desire to succeed there: “I’m not interested in FCSB! I did not want to go there. I have no reason, no explanation!”

Focus on the National Team: A Message to Mircea Lucescu

Munteanu also expressed his strong desire to return to the national team, sending a message to the national coach, Mircea Lucescu. “I want to be there again!” he declared, showing his eagerness to prove himself at the highest level through his performances at CFR Cluj.

Reflecting on the match, Munteanu acknowledged the challenge posed by Unirea Slobozia, crediting the team’s coach, Dan Petrescu, for preparing the squad thoroughly. “It was a very tough match. We did a good analysis with Mister, and he managed to keep us focused. You could see it in our attitude and play on the field. We needed the points, it was a very important match.”

Despite his personal success in front of goal, Munteanu remained grounded, emphasizing that the team’s victory was the most important outcome. “I’m happy to have scored my first goals for CFR Cluj, but the victory was what mattered. I want to be better than last year. I started well, and I hope to continue this way. The boys and the staff welcomed me very well, and the owner too. Everyone received me warmly, I feel good here.”

Mihai Stoica’s Response: FCSB’s Perspective

In response to Munteanu’s comments, Mihai Stoica, the President of the Administrative Council at FCSB, offered clarification from his club’s standpoint. “Gigi [Becali, the owner of FCSB] wanted him, not FCSB. He decided to withdraw from the race because we thought Florin Tănase could help us much more. At one point, we were no longer interested. His second goal was a trademark Louis Munteanu finish. Let’s see where he plays at CFR Cluj. Does he replace Bîrligea, play on the left, or will they change the system?”

Munteanu’s impressive debut has set high expectations for his future at CFR Cluj. With a clear focus on improving his game and aspirations of returning to the national team, the young forward is poised to become a key player for the Cluj-based club.
