Cristi Pustai, a seasoned football coach with a proven track record, has been appointed as the new head coach of Liga 3 outfit CSM Unirea Alba Iulia. The 61-year-old tactician returns to his alma mater, where he played from 1995 to 1998, and is set to bring his expertise to the team.
A Familiar Face Returns Home
Pustai’s appointment comes on the back of a tumultuous year, during which he held the reins at Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț and served as the technical director at CSM Olimpia Satu Mare. Both clubs suffered relegation to Liga 3 at the end of the previous season. Unirea Alba Iulia, currently in a precarious position, will be hoping that Pustai’s arrival will spark a turn-around in their fortunes.
The Coach’s Credentials
Pustai’s impressive CV boasts over 500 matches as a head coach in professional football. His resume includes a vice-championship title with Pandurii Târgu Jiu in the 2012-2013 season, as well as two UEFA Europa League qualifications with Gaz Metan Mediaș and Pandurii Târgu Jiu. He has also engineered two promotions to the top flight with Gaz Metan Mediaș in 2007-2008 and 2016-2017, as well as two promotions from Liga 3 to Liga 2 with Ceahlăul Piatra-Neamț and Gloria Bistrița.
Pustai has previously coached a string of Romanian clubs, including Gaz Metan Mediaș, Pandurii Târgu Jiu, ASA Târgu Mureș, Rapid București, FC Botoșani, Dunărea Călărași, FC Buzău, Ceahlăul Piatra-Neamț, Gloria Bistrița, and Olimpia Satu Mare. His staff will comprise Valentin Avădanei and Mircea Oprea as assistant coaches, Florin Anton as goalkeeping coach, Liviu Rusu as fitness coach, and Cătălin Crăciun as video analyst.
