Romanian footballer Ianis Hagi, currently on the fringes of Rangers’ first team, is reportedly close to a transfer to Rapid Bucharest. The 25-year-old winger, who has been relegated to Rangers’ B team by manager Philippe Clement, might find a new opportunity in Romania’s Superliga.

According to Scottish media, the deal between Rapid Bucharest and Rangers would involve a shared financial arrangement. Rangers, where Hagi has a contract until May 31, 2026, would cover 40% of his salary, while Rapid would take care of the remaining 60%. This compromise comes after Hagi was informed that his chances of returning to Rangers’ first team are slim due to the existing contractual clauses.
Hagi, who joined Rangers from Genk in July 2020, has struggled for game time this season. After spending last season on loan at Deportivo Alaves, the Romanian international has not featured in any of Rangers’ first four matches this season and has only played for the B team. With no other concrete offers on the table, Hagi seems willing to accept the move to Rapid, which could be his best option to avoid being sidelined until the winter transfer window.
Football Insider reported that Rapid Bucharest is in advanced negotiations with Rangers, with the deal expected to be finalized before the summer transfer window closes on August 31. However, Hagi’s current salary poses a challenge, as he would need to accept a pay cut to facilitate the move. Despite this obstacle, both clubs seem determined to reach an agreement.
Rangers have already agreed to a transfer fee of €350,000, plus performance-related bonuses, significantly lower than the €3.5 million they initially demanded before Euro 2024. The agreement would be valid for the current season, with the possibility of extending Hagi’s stay at Rapid if both parties are satisfied with the collaboration.
Hagi’s market value has dropped to €2 million, according to Transfermarkt, after scoring 16 goals and providing 21 assists in 99 appearances for Rangers. Despite his current situation, Hagi still holds potential appeal in leagues such as Turkey, the Netherlands, and Belgium, although time is running out for him to secure a move there before their transfer windows close. Rapid Bucharest, however, has until September 9 to finalize any deals, giving them an advantage in securing Hagi’s services.
As the transfer saga unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Hagi will make his return to Romanian football with Rapid Bucharest or if another opportunity will arise in the final days of the transfer window.
