Horațiu Moldovan, the 26-year-old Romanian goalkeeper, has joined Sassuolo on loan from Atletico Madrid until the end of the season. The deal includes an obligation for Sassuolo to purchase him permanently in the summer of 2025. Sassuolo, who were relegated to Serie B at the end of last season, are aiming for a quick return to Serie A under the guidance of coach Fabio Grosso.

Moldovan, who was signed by Atletico Madrid in January for €800,000, did not get any playing time under Diego Simeone, with Jan Oblak firmly holding the starting position. With Sassuolo, Moldovan is expected to be the first-choice goalkeeper, replacing Andrea Consigli, who will move to the bench. The transfer fee for the loan is €500,000, with an additional €700,000 to be paid in June when the move becomes permanent.
Moldovan’s move to Italy is also financially significant for the player, as his salary at Sassuolo will be €600,000, which is 40% less than what he earned at Atletico Madrid. Despite the pay cut, Moldovan is eager for regular playing time, hoping to reestablish himself as Romania’s national team goalkeeper.
The official announcement of his transfer is expected soon after he completes his medical examination in Italy
