Rapid Bucharest is in the midst of a deep crisis, and the club’s management, led by owner Dan Șucu, is preparing a major change on the technical bench. After a disastrous start in Superliga, with only four points from five matches and no victory, Neil Lennon’s position is becoming increasingly precarious. In these circumstances, Șucu’s dream of bringing Cristian Chivu to the helm of the team is starting to take shape.
Ultimatum for Neil Lennon
Following Rapid’s draw with Buzău and the disorganized play displayed in Crâng, Neil Lennon’s chances of continuing as head coach in the medium term are slim. Owner Dan Șucu has given him an ultimatum: three decisive matches in which the team must earn at least seven points; otherwise, separation will be inevitable. The clashes with Dinamo, Poli Iași, and U Craiova will be crucial for the Northern Irish coach’s future.
If Rapid loses the derby against Dinamo, Lennon’s departure could become a certainty before the break caused by the national team matches. However, terminating the contract won’t be easy, with financial costs estimated at over €1.5 million. Lennon and his staff have lucrative contracts, and the coach is not willing to give up his financial rights.
Cristian Chivu, Dan Șucu’s Dream
Should Lennon leave the team, Dan Șucu already has a well-thought-out plan to attract Cristian Chivu. The former captain of Romania’s national team and former coach of Inter Primavera is currently out of contract after turning down several offers, including from Ajax and the Romanian national team. Chivu is waiting for a solid project that provides guarantees for a successful career as a senior-level coach.
Chivu was present at the match between Rapid and CFR Cluj, and his appearance at Giulești has sparked speculation about a potential collaboration with the Bucharest team. Șucu’s plan to convince Chivu does not rely on a huge salary but on a medium-to-long-term project that offers the former Romanian international serious guarantees that Rapid could be the springboard to Western Europe.
Lobonț, the Key to Chivu
A crucial role in attracting Chivu to Rapid could be played by Bogdan Lobonț, a close friend of Chivu and one of Lennon’s assistants at the team. Lobonț is well-integrated into the club’s structure and enjoys the trust of Dan Șucu, who might use this relationship to persuade Chivu to accept Rapid’s offer.
Although the option of Marius Șumudică, strongly demanded by the fans, is still on the table, his extravagant style does not appeal to the owner. Thus, Cristian Chivu remains Dan Șucu’s first choice in the attempt to revitalize the Rapid team and bring it back to the forefront of Romanian football.
However, it remains to be seen if Chivu will accept the challenge and return to Romanian football by taking over the leadership of a team with tradition, but currently facing a difficult moment.
