Despite initially declaring a halt to signings this summer, FCSB is reconsidering its stance and aiming to strengthen its squad with a promising right-back, David Maftei of Farul Constanța.

Maftei, a 20-year-old defender, spent last season on loan at Oțelul Galați, where he featured under coach Dorinel Munteanu in the first half of the campaign. Munteanu praised Maftei’s talent and potential, emphasizing that the player’s development hinges on discipline and work ethic:

> “David Maftei is a talented footballer, which is why I gave him playing time. He needs to be 100% committed to discipline, hard work, and performance to improve his game. He’s young and still developing but has great potential. I tried to instill discipline and seriousness in him. Maftei possesses good speed and crossing ability but needs to improve one-on-one duels and tactical understanding. He can handle the pressure at FCSB, but that comes with discipline and focus”.

FCSB’s interest in Maftei aligns with the club’s need for a reliable backup to Ionuț Cercel, their primary right-back who fulfills the Under-21 age rule essential in the Romanian Superliga. Mihai Stoica, FCSB’s board president, confirmed the club’s intent to secure another young right-back eligible for this rule, with Maftei and Andrei Dorobanțu (from Unirea Slobozia) on the shortlist.

Maftei’s recent season statistics highlight his growing experience in top-flight football. In the 2024/2025 Superliga season, he featured in 22 matches, starting 19 times, accumulating over 1,500 minutes, with one assist and disciplined play reflected by only a single yellow card.

FCSB’s pursuit of Maftei marks an urgent move to bolster squad depth ahead of the new season, following recent signings of Daniel Graovac, Denis Alibec, and Dennis Politic, alongside the return of Ovidiu Perianu and Laurențiu Vlăsceanu from loan spells.
