Dan Șucu, the majority shareholder of Rapid, recently explained the reasons behind the decision to sack Neil Lennon after just six rounds of the new Superliga season. The announcement came during the press conference introducing Marius Șumudică as the new head coach of Rapid.

Șucu expressed his disappointment with the team’s poor performance under Lennon, particularly noting how Rapid was outplayed on their home ground. The breaking point for Șucu appeared to be Rapid’s match against Sepsi, which ended in a 2-2 draw. In that game, Rapid managed just 28% possession, a statistic that frustrated the club’s leadership.

In addressing the financial aspects of Lennon’s departure, Șucu aimed to clear up any misinformation circulating among the fans. He stated, “I have the opportunity to speak to a million Rapid fans, and I hope they can discern between reality and the false information meant to cause harm. It’s nonsense that we’re paying 1.5 million euros for Lennon’s departure.”

He clarified that the actual amount paid to Lennon for his contract termination was far less than the rumored figure, specifically less than 10% of what had been speculated. According to reports, Șucu paid Lennon 98,000 euros to terminate his contract.

Șucu also emphasized that the decision to part ways with Lennon was not about the contract or any termination clause but rather the need to see progress on the pitch. He added, “We discussed with Mr. Șumudică. We respect our coach more than any other club. We want to pay our coach better than any player at the club. Our focus is solely on making things work well.”

The dismissal of Lennon, who had a brief and underwhelming stint at Rapid, underscores the high expectations and pressure to perform at the club, particularly under the watchful eye of Dan Șucu.
