Mihaela Buzărnescu, Romania’s former world No. 20, marked an emotional return to the UniCredit Iași Open—her first appearance since a devastating ankle injury sidelined her at the same venue three years ago. On Tuesday, she faced compatriot Sorana Cîrstea in the opening round, ultimately falling 6–2, 6–2 in her fourth comeback match since resuming her career under a protected ranking earlier this year.
Buzărnescu’s journey back to the court has been arduous. In August 2022, she left Baza Sportivă Ciric on a stretcher after suffering a severe ankle injury while leading Cristina Dinu, a painful déjà vu after a similar injury in 2018. Her recovery spanned three years, during which she doubted her ability to compete again and battled ongoing health issues that limited her training capacity. Still, she expressed gratitude simply for returning to professional play and for the chance to compete once more before her home crowd.
The match itself highlighted both her courage and her rust. Buzărnescu admitted her current level is far from her peak, as injuries and health complications have yet to be fully resolved. Nevertheless, she emphasized the importance of positivity, family support, and taking each match as a bonus after such a long absence.
For Buzărnescu, this tournament was about closure rather than results—an opportunity to retire on her own terms rather than be forced out by injury. While she remains uncertain about her future in tennis, she hopes to remain involved in the sport in some capacity after hanging up her racket.
Buzărnescu’s comeback underscores the resilience required in elite sport, but also the reality that even the most determined athletes must eventually contend with the limits of their bodies.
