After three years abroad marked by fluctuating performances, Romanian midfielder Alexandru Cicâldău returned to Universitatea Craiova hoping to revive his career. However, medical issues sidelined him as early as February, and now, with his loan spell expiring this summer, his future remains uncertain. Cicâldău is focused on regaining full fitness, but whether he will continue at Craiova or elsewhere is still unresolved, with his loan contract concluding and the decision resting with the club, according to agent Giovanni Becali.
Cicâldău, once a Romanian national team regular, lost his place during Mircea Lucescu’s tenure as head coach. His recent time abroad included a loan at Konyaspor in Turkey’s Super Lig, where he struggled to make a significant impact, scoring only once in 31 appearances and failing to secure a permanent move. His parent club, Galatasaray, holds his contract until June 2026. Reports indicate that Craiova may have an option to buy, but so far the club’s stance is pending.
Meanwhile, Universitatea Craiova is actively rebuilding its squad under sporting director Sorin Cârțu, who highlighted a particularly productive transfer window with numerous signings, including young talents and experienced players. The club aims to add at least one more striker before the season starts, with ambitions to finish in the top three, challenge for the league title, secure European competition qualification, and win the Romanian Cup. Cârțu praised the club’s financial commitment, noting an investment of approximately €4 million by the shareholders to strengthen the team.
Cicâldău’s situation illustrates the challenges faced by Romanian players returning from abroad after struggling for consistent form and fitness. His recovery and potential permanent return to Craiova could still provide a boost for both player and club as they prepare for a competitive season ahead.
